Well said! I am currently in a certificate program backed by a University, an in-person one to be exact. Like you, I had experience before starting the class, but I agree there is so much to learn about running your own business. I look forward to proudly saying, "I am a certified planner."

Great post! I interned with an experienced wedding planner for a year+ and am currently going through a certification course which I love so far. I personally just want to learn and gain as much knowledge as possible in this industry, so it made sense for me. I know it's not "required" but I know I will benefit from it. I definitely plan on joining an association such as ABC one day too, once I get my business started! :)

Reminds me of my first rehearsal. Not only was a little nerve wrecking. But, they weren't late, they just didn't show. If they showed, they were running off at the mouth or not cooperating. And there I was.... this little Brooklyn girl, saying Lord help me! LOL... But, now, Tywana don't play none of that!! :-) A little practice, some education, and a back bone. Good example why we all need to get educated first, find a mentor, and go to good teaching conferences like Backstage Bridal.

Awesome post!! I have assisted at many rehearsals during my internship when I first started, but man there is nothing like doing it all by yourself when you have your own business. LOL There is no one to look over to for a moment of confirmation that you are doing the right thing. The only ppl looking at you are a set of 20 + eyes. I love planning weddings, but I always get nervous when it's time to begin the rehearsal. I am really short and look like a baby so ppl automatically think I don't know what I am doing. However I walk in with a big smile and I run the show! I move quick, I give directions, I ask for any questions, I run it again and an extra time if needed. My rehearsals go rather quickly and I even though it is a scary feeling I do enjoy it! I truly loved reading this post because certifications can really leave you lost and possibly ruining someone's wedding day. There is nothing like real-life hands on experience. I cherish my internship..it was a true wake up call and eye opener. I learned so much..it was the YES I needed to give me a chance to show my passion and talent for this industry. Wedding Day is like a rush for me..I wake up nervous but excited..however when my feet hit the ground all plans are in motion! I am a little fire cracker that makes dreams come true. Rehearsals are scary..but when you have the experience, knowledge and confidence you can handle any crazy bridal party!!! :-)

Thanks for posting this. I have heard those words and you are right, I usually left defeated thinking that I had lost the client. Thanks for the different approach. I think it would be easy to do and will hopefully create a better opportunity to resolve her concerns. I am definitely trying this one.

Great way of looking at it! Another pointer for networking events is to make it a point to meet 2-3 new people. It's easy to stick with familiar faces, but stepping outside of your comfort zone will pay off in the end.
